Guru Vandana Means Teacher Appreciation

Guru Vandana Means Teacher Appreciation

On Saturday, May 14, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh — a non-profit, social, educational, and cultural organization that coordinates the Hindu American community to practice, preserve, and advance ideals and values of Hindu Dharma — held a Guru Vandana program to celebrate Avon educators.

'Guru Vandana' is a beautiful and meaningful phrase. 'Gu' means 'darkness' and 'Ru' means 'Remover'. 'Vandana' means 'Appreciation'.

River Birch Elementary School Principal Heather Gorgas served as the event's Chief Guest. "It was super cool!" she said. In her role, she had the honor of lighting the lamp to start the event. Light has an important place in Hindu celebrations. It symbolizes knowledge and is the physical representation of ignorance (darkness) being destroyed by truth (light).

Thank you to the local Hindu community for this generous, thoughtful demonstration of respect and appreciation for our teachers.
