Pine Tree & River Birch Unite for Special Event

Pine Tree & River Birch Unite for Special Event

On a sunny afternoon, 70 students from Pine Tree and River Birch Elementary Schools — along with their teachers and a few dozen parents — enjoyed a Unified Sports event at Avon Middle School North.

Special Education students and their 'buddies' — students who voluneered to participat — enjoyed an afternoon of large group fun and games along with some interactive athletic challenges. Our partners at Special Olympics Indiana joined in to coordinate all the activities and interactions.

Unified sports are a great way to get students involved in our special education programming out onto the field to complete. More than that, they provide a context where they can form friendships with their neurotypical peers and classmates.

The afternoon activities ended with the Special Olympics pledge and the Cha-Cha Slide before students boarded buses to head back to school.

Way to go, students!
